Band Profile: Post Paradise

Post Paradise is a quartet of musicians in Fort Collins, CO who plays alternative indie rock and uses CHAUVET® DJ lighting. The unique instrumentation of vocals, guitar, bass, drums and lead cello give the band options for melodic content that has been amassing a generous buzz around Northern Colorado. Read on and get to more about them.

1. How did you come up with the name of your band?
We came up with Post Paradise after I moved from Florida to Fort Collins, CO. Everyone thought Florida was paradise, but I didn’t quite agree — at least from a musical standpoint. When I moved to Fort Collins, the music scene was so amazing and I realized I found what comes after paradise.

2. How many members are there?
Post Paradise is made up of four musicians: Nick Duarte (vocals and guitar), Amy Morgan (cello), Chris Santolla (bass) and and Mark Roshon (drums and vocals).

3. What type of music do you play?
We play original alternative/indie rock with a lead cello. We’re based out of Fort Collins, and we play locally as well as regionally. The farthest we’ve traveled to play is either Rhode Island or Austin, Texas for SXSW. As I write this we’re getting ready for a festival show at Red Rocks Amphitheater with the Silversun Pickups later today!

4. What CHAUVET® fixtures are included in your setup?
We currently mount two Fallout™ and two Trident™ effect lights on stands and place them on either side of the stage, behind our amps, to project effects. Our drummer has a MiniSphere™ 3 behind him that shoots beams up and out through the drums. To enhance the lighting effects, we use a Hurricane haze machine. It does a killer job and the lights wouldn’t look like much without it —we love that thing. We use three COLORpalette™ wash lights at the front of the stage to wash each musician. Last week we purchased wireless D-Fi™ Tx 2.4 and D-Fi™ Rx 2.4 units so we won’t have to run cables along the stage anymore.

5. Are they permanently installed somewhere or do you set them up for each performance?
We travel and tour with our lights, so we have to set them up before every show. We usually don’t get a lot of time for setup (sometimes as little as 15-20 minutes including sound check) so decreasing our lighting setup time is key. Our lights used to take about 10 minutes to set up, but we think that can be cut that in half with the wireless units. Wherever we go, we have the venue kill all of the stage lights and use our own setup. We run our show off a Logic click track so everything is completely programmed to follow the mood of the songs themselves.

6. A show without lights is like…
A show without lights is like a cake without icing — it’s still tasty but not nearly as awesome.

DJ Profile: DJ Psycho D

Psycho D is a professional DJ performing in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas. He is the winner of a CHAUVET® Trident™ effect light in a DJ Warz contest presented by Rhythm City DJ Skool at Guitar Center in Hallandale, Fla. 1. How and when did you get started as a DJ? What types of events do you do?
I began DJing in the early ‘80s and took it full time in the ‘90s. I am a professional disc jockey playing every genre of music. I perform in clubs, concerts, hall and holiday events and radio shows.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side? If it’s a side job, please let us know what you do full time.
This is my full-time career. I am the music director for FONYE Radio. I spin in clubs and at weddings around the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup? What are you looking to add?
My setup includes two Technics DJ Turntables, two CDJ players, Virtual, Traktor and Serato DJ software, the Trident™ from CHAUVET® and the Circus™ effect light, which is now in demand in a lot of clubs. The  Circus™ is good and has excellent features of directional lighting. I have been using the Trident™ in clubs and I like its transition of lighting, the voice recognition, the brightness, everything. We had it on for an entire night and it did great.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Learn how it all started with vinyl, then work your way up to CDs, then learn the programs.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
My most popular songs are “Otis” by Jay-Z & Kanye West, “Bon, Bon” by Pitbull and “N****s in Paris” by Kanye West & Jay-Z.

1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product and why:
I have a favorite wash light, moving yoke and effect light. In my opinion, the COLORado™ 2 IP  is one of the top LED PAR style wash lights in the entertainment scene. It has powerful color temperature presets and lux. The best moving yoke in the USA market is the Q-Spot™ 560-LED. It is powered by three 60-watt LEDs which give a 1,929 @ 5m lux. The best light for impressing customers is the Trident™ LED effect light. The 7-watt tri-colored LEDs give me a wide coverage angle.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video:
My favorite CHAUVET YouTube video is the “Create Your Own Gobo for CHAUVET® Gobo Zoom™ LED” video. It’s an easy and fast way to fulfill special requests from clients at weddings and corporate fuctions where customized projections are a plus.

3. Favorite DJ and why?:
My favorite colleague is Armin van Buuren because he owns his business and manages one of the most important and profitable record agencies in the world. When you review international dance music charts, it’s not a coincidence that an Armada Music artist is in the top 10.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights:
Right now, my favorite event setup is the design created for the event covered in “CHAUVET® Mingles with New Faces of Hollywood“. It’s great how technology and an event can help the people of Haiti.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs:
Pay attention. Read and stay updated. Make sure you understand the content. A lot of DJs only care the cost of lighting gear and very few DJs review the specs. If you operate that way, you can’t do a real cost versus benefits analysis.

6. Complete this sentence:
A show without lights is like a Christmas tree without lights.
