1. How did you get started as a DJ?
I started DJing in 2003. The events I attended were in need of a DJ, so I decided to invest in some equipment which included a pair of Numark CD players, and a mixer. I started out doing small parties for my friends which resulted in referrals. I DJ all types of events including weddings, birthday celebrations, school events and other special occasions.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
I have a passion for music and entertaining others, but DJing has always been just a side job.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
I recently just started investing in lighting for my setup. I have a few SlimPAR™ LED wash lights and a Scorpion™ Storm FX laser. I would like to add more uplighting to my setup so I can offer my clients extra services.

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
So far, my Scorpion™ Storm FX laser is my favorite fixture.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Learn your music well and spend the extra money on quality equipment because it will pay for itself in the end.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
My top three requested songs are “The Wobble” by V.I.C., “Cha-Cha Slide” by Mr. C The Slide Man and “Se Pa Pou Dat” by Identity featuring Alan Cave.

CHAUVET® DJ Transforms the Blue Room

The owner of a multi-million dollar beachfront estate in Laguna Beach, Calif. enjoys entertaining so much that he transformed one of the rooms in his home into a miniature club. Nicknamed the “Blue Room,” the miniature club features an enormous flat panel TV for video, movies and karaoke, a state-of-the-art audio system, an automated touch panel control system, a wine cellar and bar, an underwater view into the patio hot tub, priceless ocean views and a light show created with CHAUVET® DJ gear.

Red Fish Illuminations lighting designer Doug Northeim specified a Scorpion™ GBC laser, an Intimidator™ 1.0 scanner and a DIAMONDstrip™ strobe light to transform the 25-by-25 foot space. To meet the owner’s needs, Northeim created a high energy dance club effect that can play all night long without getting monotonous — all with the touch of a button.

“Architecturally speaking, the room is clean lined and pure, so the simplicity lends to a wide range of energy states,” Northeim said. “It can go from a soothing underwater glow and ripple effect, complete with actual ocean waves from the beach outside brought in via microphone, or it can be a high energy dance club with a fully automated video, audio, and lighting system. The CHAUVET® DJ fixtures transform the space. The innocently simple space, which might be used for a formal wine tasting party, can instantly transform into a high energy club when the guests are ready to take the party to the next level.

3 Steps to Create a Beginner’s Rig

Become a professional DJ and have a setup like Jay Fitzgerald of The D’Jay Company. He uses SlimPAR™ 56 wash lights to illuminate this wedding at The Mission Inn in Riverside, Calif.

As a DJ who is just starting out, you should know that your lighting rig is as
important as your sound system. Including lighting in your DJ setup makes you
look more professional and can significantly increase your profit potential. To
upsell a client on a lighting package, every rig should include a variety of wash
and effect lights.

Of course we have to suggest some of our favorite fixtures. Some of our favorite wash lights include DJ Bank™, any of the SlimPAR™ fixtures and 4BAR™ Flex. Adding a Comet™ LED or any of the MiN™ or Scorpion™ lasers to your rig will create movement and colorful effects. Read on for tips on building a rig.

1. How and when did you get started as a DJ?
After playing in bands and recording several albums (“Behind the Scene” and “Colourful Freedom” by The Rafters currently on iTunes), I finally decided to become a professional DJ. I had experience entertaining and DJing for family and friends so the transition was a natural for me because I already knew sound equipment and lighting gear. My wife and I started DJ Dave Productions about six years ago and together we make a dynamic team for our clients.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
This is a full-time job for me.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
We use a multitude of fixtures including Intimidator™ Spot LED 250 moving heads, Scorpion™ Storm lasers, LED Followspot 75, COLORpalette™ wash lights, and 4BAR™ Tri and 4Play CL™ effect lights.  We’re looking into truss to bring the added “wow” factor to our events.

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
My favorite fixtures are the 4BAR™ Tri and 4Play CL™ effect lights. These are just right for most wedding receptions we do.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Be patient, invest in a professional website, join a professional DJ association like the American Disc Jockey Association, and attend trade shows and seminars to become a better DJ. Your income and future depends solely on this. Raise your rates so you can make a good living in this awesome and fantastic profession. Be proud to be a professional DJ and always set high standards and a great example for the industry.

My full-time job is in medical sales, but I DJ one to three nights per week.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup? What are you looking to add?

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
I would have to say my Scorpion GBC laser. The Fat Beam™ laser effect looks sick in an environment without fog or haze. However, if you add smoke or haze, it looks like nothing I’ve ever used!

Be humble. Offer to open for local guys. Most importantly, practice, practice, practice!

CHAUVET® visits SLS

Sound & Lighting Solutions (SLS) moved to a new Fort Lauderdale location with more space and a showroom dedicated to CHAUVET® fixtures. The highly anticipated open house, which turned out to be a mobile DJ and club installers dream, gave attendees the chance to get hands-on with the latest CHAUVET® lighting gear and atmospheric products. During the event, Jay Krause, owner of SLS, walked attendees around the showroom and gave live demos.

Beams from Mega Trix™ flooded the main showroom as gobos from Q-Spot™ 560-LED spanned the walls and ceiling. SlimPAR™ PRO RGBA wash lights and the 100% TRUE wireless Freedom™ series saturated the room with blue and red hues. Krause gave a live demo of the powerful Nimbus™ dry-ice machine in the CHAUVET® showroom as Intimidator™  scanners and movers, Rotosphere™ LED, Cubix™, Orb™, Scorpion™ lasers, and numerous other fixtures created a light show.

“This is our eighth year in business and we needed a more spacious showroom for all our architectural and DJ products, Krause said. “CHAUVET® offers the best products and has the most versatile product line — there is a full spectrum DJ and Pro products at my disposal for any type of application and installation.”

In the back of the building, a crowd of lighting enthusiasts gathered outside for a wash light demo. The lineup included PiXPar™ 12, PiXPar™ 24, COLORado™ 1 IP, Legend™ 412 VW, Q-Wash™ 560Z-LED, WELL™, SlimPAR™ Pro Tri, SlimPAR™ Pro RGBA and COLORado™ Batten 144 Tour.  One open house attendee, Sean Paul Powell, found the performance of Q-Wash™ 560Z-LED particularly impressive.

“The Q-Wash™ 560Z-LED is a very impressive light,” Powell said. “I can wash a stage or open the beam and double its size. I’m buying two!”

Scorpion™ Storm FX Lights 4NZX

Don Audio shared this photo that was taken at Painter’s Restaurant in New York. The Forensics (4NZX), an electronica band, gave a special performance as laser beams from a Scorpion™ Storm FX filled the venue.

LASER Basics

by Allan Reiss, product manager for CHAUVET®

We think everyone can agree that lasers are an asset to any event and are one of the greatest effect fixtures you can have on your rig. Nowadays, lasers can include multiple patterns, feature a ton of effects, and project beams in bold colors such as red, green, blue, magenta, violet, cyan and yellow. The first step to creating a great laser show is knowing how to properly use them.  Click here for some helpful hints to remember when it comes to operating lasers.
