CHAUVET® DJ and TRUSST® Prove to Be a Saving Grace for S.H.E.A.R., Inc.

CHAUVET® DJ and TRUSST® are teaming together to support S.H.E.A.R., Inc., Sharing Hope Empowerment and Reaction, in their effort to help at-risk youth in Miami. The dynamic duo is lending a hand by sponsoring the Holy Ghost -N- Da Hood gospel concert held on June 15 at the Miami Rescue Mission. To enhance live performances by renowned gospel artists, including Malcolm Hawkins, Mark Samuel and Scum of the Earth, the stage is set to feature 26 CHAUVET® DJ fixtures and a 24-piece TRUSST® trussing system.

Anthony Durden, quality control technician for Chauvet and president of S.H.E.A.R., Inc., partnered with Raglan Jones, product coordinator for Chauvet, to create a design that complemented the event. For a prominent focal point on stage, Jones designed a TRUSST®-built cross illuminated with four SlimPAR™ Quad 6 IRC wash lights and crafted from one 2.5-meter and three 1-meter sticks of truss, one 6-way corner block and one 30-inch base plate. To add dimension, he incorporated six Intimidator™ Spot LED 350 moving heads mounted atop two 1-meter, two 1.5-meter and two 2-meter sticks of TRUSST® warmed with six SlimPAR™ Quad 6 IRC wash lights into the design. Additionally, two 4BAR™ Tri wash lights will add front lighting to performers, while two Geyser™ RGB fixtures, two Impulse™ 648 strobe lights and a Nimbus™ dry-ice machine emit impressive, eye-catching effects. To enhance beams and tie the light show together, two Hurricane™ Haze 2D haze machines will be placed at the rear of the stage. For more information about this event, please click here.

DJ Profile: Dr. Byrd

Joe Banko, aka Dr. Byrd, owns Stone Age Lighting & Sound in Arizona and is one of the newest members to the CHAUVET® DJ VIP Rewards program. He spent 12 years on the road as a lighting designer and roadie, then went on to work in the IT industry. After a few decades, Banko grew tired of the IT sub culture and went back to the entertainment industry. He specializes in parties, proms, weddings, corporate events and any other type of event where people want to have a great time. Read on and get to know a little more about your fellow DJ.

1. How and when did you get started as a DJ?
I spent 12 years on the road as a lighting designer and roadie. Traveling the country in a Winnebago or 12-seat plane can be fun, but it can also physically burn you out. You do learn to cook and that ended up getting me married. I got sidetracked for a couple of decades in the IT industry, ended up getting tired of the IT sub-culture, and went back to entertainment a couple of years ago. I have much more fun throwing photons and sound waves around in creative ways.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
Both — it depends how busy I want to be. I use about four software packages and have written an iPad application to run all of them from a single device. I also run and program my DMX/MIDI sequences from the same application using my iPhone to send live video to my video switching software. This allows me to interact with the audience and run the show at the same time — people love to be involved. For side jobs, I’m also a data analyst, database developer and software developer.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
My setup includes: Scorpion™ RGY and Scorpion™ GBC 2.0 lasers, LED Mushroom™ and 6SPOT™ effect lights, a MotionFacade™ LED drape and a Bubble King™ bubble machine.  I’m looking to add a bigger truss system, a Nimbus™ dry-ice machine, Intimidator™ Spot moving heads, more uplighting and Xpress™ 512 Plus.

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
My Scorpion™ lasers. I have loved laser technology since I was a teenager and you can program the heck out of these using DMX.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Watch: what’s hot in video, what gets people dancing and what the competition is doing. Listen: what’s hot in music, how to hook tunes together and what your clients want.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
“Gangnam Style” by Psy, “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO, “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey.

DJ Profile: Stacy Zemon

Stacy Zemon is considered an authority on the DJ industry and is widely recognized as a distinguished industry leader who made ground-breaking educational contributions. She has 15 years of experience as a mobile DJ and has reached millions as a radio, club, karaoke and mobile DJ, as well as a writer, author and publisher. Zemon is also the founder and president of DJ Video Network (DJVN) — a free, one-stop destination and platform for DJs to view and share original video content. Read on and get to know more about her.

1. How did you get started as a DJ?
I started as a full-time DJ in 1979 doing weddings, parties and corporate events.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
I worked as a mobile DJ for 15 years. Now, I am the president of DJVN, and the publisher and chief scribe of Pro Mobile DJ — a web site that provides tools and resources to DJs managing their own entertainment services.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
N/A

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
My favorite CHAUVET® DJ gear is the 4BAR™ wash light and Nimbus™.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Work for a multi-op and learn the craft before considering venturing out on your own. Also, when the time is right, invest in quality equipment. Over time, it will be well worth the additional money spent.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
As a DJ for 15 years, I would say my top three requested songs of all time were: “Sweet Caroline” by  Neil Diamond, “Dancing Queen” by ABBA and “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton.
