Metro Sound & Lighting Hosts Chauvet Expo 2013

Our Central Territory Manager for CHAUVET® DJ, Jelani Williams, traveled to Minnesota to take part in Metro Sound & Lighting’s Chauvet Expo 2013. The expo featured lighting demonstrations using the latest CHAUVET® DJ gear and TRUSST® kits — the Intimidator™ Spot series proved to be a crowd favorite. During the event, Williams touted the CHAUVET® DJ VIP Rewards program and delivered a ShowXpress™ seminar that taught attendees how to do the following: set up a fixture, build a show in editor, use the generator and how to trigger shows in Live. Overall, it was a very successful event!

DJ Profile: DJ Bill Lyons

Bill Lyons, aka DJ Bill Lyons, lives in Bangor, Maine and DJs at wedding receptions, clubs, holiday parties and school dances from Bar harbor to Millinocket. Read on and get to know more about your fellow DJ.

1. How did you get started as a DJ?
Back in 1980, we hosted a school dance to raise money for our high school class. With the help of friends, we put together a sound system, setup a few lights and DJ’d the dance. It’s been almost 32 years and I still get people that remember those dances.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
I am the general manager at an airport retail company where I put in more than 40 hours per week. However, I always put full-time hours into my DJ business.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
My setup keeps growing as I get new ideas and new lights become available. My light show consists of two Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving heads, 12 SlimPAR™ 64 wash lights, two LED Pinspot™ 360 fixtures and two Hurricane™ F-800 fog machines. To create effects, I also have a Cubix™, two Derby™ X, two Obsession™ LED and two Slasher™ effect lights. I use an Obey™ 10 DMX controller to control all my fixtures, but I would love to have the ShowXpress™ software. I would also like to add some of the completely wireless Freedom™ fixtures as well as a couple more SlimPAR™ 64 wash lights.

4. What is your favorite fixture?
Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 is by far my favorite fixture. I am new to DMX and these lights have so much to offer — I learn something new about them each time I use them. Great product.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Pay attention to your client and give them 110 percent every time. The music is for their listening and dancing enjoyment, not yours. Keep in mind that anyone can play music, but it’s what you do for your client (before and while you are playing) that sets the professionals apart from the others. Be a professional.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
“Wild Ones” by Flo Rida, “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen and “Turn Me On” by David Guetta and Nicki Minaj.

DJ Bill Lyons and his Intimidator™ Movers

Bill Lyons is a DJ in the Bangor, Maine area who recently added two CHAUVET® DJ Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving heads to his setup. He owns his own business, DJ Bill Lyons, and caters to the area from Bar Harbor all the way up to Millinocket. He specializes in weddings, but holiday parties, school dances and clubs make up a lot of his gigs. Read on to see why this DJ added Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving heads to his setup and how he feels about their performance.

1. Why did you select a CHAUVET® DJ fixture?
I have always trusted Chauvet. I have quite a few CHAUVET® DJ fixtures in my setup including: two Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving heads, 12 CHAUVET® DJ SlimPAR™ 64 wash lights, two CHAUVET® DJ LED Pinspot™ 360 fixtures and two CHAUVET® DJ Hurricane™ F-800 fog machines. To create effects, I also have a CHAUVET® DJ Cubix™, two CHAUVET® DJ Derby™ X, two CHAUVET® DJ Obsession™ LED and two CHAUVET® DJ Slasher™ effect lights. I use an CHAUVET® DJ Obey™ 40 DMX controller to control all my fixtures, but I would love to have the CHAUVET® DJ ShowXpress™ software.

2. Why did you decide to add Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving heads to your setup?
It was exactly what I was looking for — a bright moving yoke that was compact, lightweight and not too heavy.

3. What specific features were you looking for?
I wanted a moving yoke that would work perfectly in the venues I play in. I wanted it to be easy to control and operate with amazing coverage.

4. What do you like best/least about Intimidator™ Spot LED 150?
I like the size and speed of the moving yoke. If I was able to add a feature, I would like this fixture to include changeable gobos.

5. Do you feel it’s easy to operate?
These fixtures are very easy to operate.

6. Would you recommend this fixture, why or why not?
Absolutely. They are the main focus of my light show. I really love all the effects this light projects. They are bright, fun to use and I never get bored with them.

CHAUVET® Sponsors CHC at the Grammys Fund-raiser

CHAUVET® was a gold sponsor for the yearly fund-raiser organized by Community Habilitation Center, a facility that supports and serves 150 adults with developmental disabilities from Miami-Dade County, ranging in ages from 21 to 71. This year’s theme was CHC at the Grammys. CHC members participated in a fashion show, and guests bid in live auctions, raising funds for the center. CHAUVET® Professional WELL™ wireless wash lights lit the stage and washed the walls of the room. CHAUVET® Professional COLORado™ 1 VW Tour wash lights, CHAUVET® DJ SlimPAR™ Pro RGBA fixtures and Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving yokes lit the stage and catwalk from pipe truss. Here are some vivid shots from the event:

An Examination of Intimidator™ Spot LED 150

Kenneth Merenda, aka DJ K-Rock, of Houston, Texas considers himself a DJ hobbyist. Though DJing is not his primary source of income, he frequently DJs for promotional events like in-store fashion shows for clothing boutiques, the Simon Fashion Show held at the Houston Galleria and an annual winter hair fashion show for Visible Changes salon. Merenda just added an Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 to his setup — read on as he reviews his latest addition.

1. Why did you select a CHAUVET® DJ fixture?
I did quite a bit of product research for fixtures in my price range, and CHAUVET® was always the most popular. That information, coupled with my past experience with CHAUVET® fixtures, made it an easy call.

2. Why did you decide to purchase the Intimidator™ Spot LED 150?
I knew I wanted a moving yoke, but I wasn’t going to commit to anything until I saw it in action. When I arrived at Guitar Center and saw all of the display fixtures they had running, there was one that stood out brighter than the rest – Intimidator™ Spot LED 150. I had to get a sales representative to verify that the fixture I saw really was the one I was thinking of. I couldn’t believe the output. I bought this fixture the same day I bought the new iPad, and I had a lot more fun playing with the fixture than I did with the iPad.

3. What specific features were you looking for?
Fixture quality and brightness were the most important. Whatever I decided on had to be very bright and I didn’t want an ugly or cheap looking fixture because most of my events are done at fashion shows where house lighting stays on.

4. What do you like best about the Intimidator™ Spot LED 150?
The output is, by far, the best.  It exceeds the brightness I expected from an LED fixture and creates nice crisp edges with the gobos. For the price of this fixture, there isn’t too much not to like. A prism or rotating gobos would have knocked it out of the park, but I’m still happy.

5. Do you feel it’s easy to operate?
Incredibly easy. Setting up DMX is just as simple as switching to sound-active mode or using fast/slow macros.

6. Would you recommend this fixture, why or why not?
I would absolutely recommend it.  I plan to get at least one more myself. I DJ for two reasons:  the music and the toys.  I hate cheap DJ light shows where you can tell they bought the “party lighting package” box.” Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 lets me put on a nightclub-quality light show without spending thousands of dollars.

DJ Profile: DJ Awtkazt

Robert A. Velasco, aka DJ Awtkazt (pronounced outcast), is a DJ who lives in New Brunswick, N.J. and caters to the N.Y. and N.J. areas. He owns and operates Skorpio Productions Entertainment and DJs all types events from car shows to weddings. Read on and get to know more about him.

1. How did you get started as a DJ?
I became interested in DJing in the 80′s because my uncle was a DJ in the NY mobile circuit. I started DJing in 1994 and currently do private and corporate events.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
DJing is a part-time gig for me.  I work full time as an implementation analyst for a healthcare automation company.

 3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
I use an Obey™ 40 DMX controller to control my fixtures. I’m looking to add Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving yokes, a haze or fog machine and a bunch of SlimPAR™ wash lights for uplighting.

4. What is your favorite fixture?
I haven’t added moving yokes or scanners to my setup yet, so I can’t say I have a favorite fixture. I can’t wait to see the lineup coming to the 2012 DJ Expo because I plan to pick up some new gear.

 5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Seek professional advice and budget accordingly.

 6. What are your top three most requested songs?
Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen, “Brokenhearted” by Karmin and “Drive By” by Train.

Setting Up Something INfectious

by Allan Reiss, CHAUVET® DJ Product Manager

After months of preparing, the event was finally here — time to start setting up for LDI! Our team arrived at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando and we were eager to start building the CHAUVET® Club/DJ booth. Conceptualizing and designing the booth back at headquarters took months and we were excited to see our computer renderings become a reality.

Seven men worked 13-hour days for four consecutive days to construct our masterpiece. We pieced together 132 pieces of truss to create a 28-foot tall, 400-square-foot booth. After the frame of the booth was put together, it was time to mount more than 200 fixtures.

Just to give you an idea, here is a short list of some of the products we installed:
25 x COLORband™ Tri
22 x COLORrail™ IRC
6 x DMF-10
19 x Intimidator™ Spot LED 150
15 x Intimidator™ Wash LED 150
6 x Impulse™ 648
5 x LFS-5
6 x MiN™ Laser FX 2.0
6 x MiN™ Laser RGX 2.0
11 x MotionDrape™ LED
14 x Q-Spot™260 LED
6 x RotoSphere™ LED
17 x SlimPAR™ Pro Tri
7 x TriShot™ LED

Once everything was securely mounted, I began programming and it took me roughly 10 hours to create a light show that ran in sync with a special mega-mix video created by DVDJ Unique. I wanted the freedom to control the fixtures from my smartphone, so I decided to use ShowXpress™ instead of a DMX control board.

Setting up our booth went pretty smooth. Besides being physically exhausted, we didn’t run into any challenges or glitches. Whew! A big “thank you” to my fellow product development teammates David Velez, Michael Corby, Raglan Jones and Richmond McDaniel (as well as Joel and Alex from the union) for all their hard work and making LDI 2011 a success. See you next year in Vegas!

CHAUVET® Lighting is “INfectious”

We traveled to Orlando, Fla.to take part in one of the industry’s largest trade shows: LDI. Team CHAUVET® spent months preparing for the show and introduced more than a dozen new products to the Club/DJ market. The show took place on Halloween weekend so we gave our booth an “infected” theme in hopes that LDI attendees would find our new fixtures “infectious.”

The 400-square-foot DJ booth included just over 200 mounted fixtures. The light show, which was programmed using ShowXpress™ and operated wirelessly using D-Fi™ 2.4GHz, ran in sync with a special mega-mix video created especially for us by DVDJ Unique. Just before the trade show floor opened, our product development team started the Arena™ 2100 Flex and we were ready to rock day one. As soon as clips from Rockwell’s “Somebody’s Watching Me” music video came on, the elaborate light show began and attendees were instantly infected. SlimPAR™ Tri 7 IRC  and SlimPAR™ Tri 12 IRC wash lights and Intimidator™ Wash LED 150 moving heads created vibrant, saturated washes throughout the booth. At the same time, bright, colorful beams from Rotosphere™ LED and DMF-10 effect lights,  MiN™ Laser FX 2.0 and MiN™ Laser RGX 2.0 lasers, TriShot™ LED color changer and Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving head danced wildly throughout the air.

Additional fixtures mounted to tree-like truss designs located within the booth gave attendees the opportunity to get hands-on with the new products. Booth goers went crazy for the battery-operated, 100% TRUE wireless Freedom™ Par  and Freedom™ Strip Mini wash lights, and the convenience of controlling COLORrail™ IRC linear wash light with a wireless remote left them addicted. LED Followspot 75 was mounted to a CH-W28 stand and attendees were invited to try their hand at altering the beam diameter by moving the mechanical iris and changing the beam color simply by pushing a button. Impulse™ 648, an ultra-bright strobe light powered by 648 LEDs, proved to be a crowd favorite. To give the ultimate CHAUVET® experience and top off the visit to our booth, we put Nimbus™  dry-iced machine to work and flooded the floor with thick, white clouds.

Overall, LDI was an unbelievable show for CHAUVET®. Not only did we successfully infect attendees with our lighting fixtures, we had a blast doing it. It should also be noted that the CHAUVET® Pro booth received the award for Best Large Booth — woo hoo! Thank you to everyone who stopped by and supported CHAUVET®. See you in 2012!
