Crazy Dave’s Music Experience was a huge success at this year’s Welcome to Rockville Festival. The sold-out festival, which took place in Jacksonville, featured performances by artists including Buckcherry, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Limp Bizkit and Alice In Chains. During the event, Crazy Dave’s Music created an interactive exhibit featuring all the elements needed to create music in a professional band setting. The exhibit included 12 CHAUVET® DJ fixtures, 20 CHAUVET® Professional lights and one TRUSST® Goal Post Kit, as well as guitars, bass, amps, drums, keyboards, electronic gear and lighting used by today’s most popular bands.

Within the 30-by-30 foot tent, people took turns playing guitars, drums and keyboards, singing into different microphones and trying their hand at the latest DJ equipment. They also got the chance to meet some of their favorite rock stars and take part in the “30 Seconds to Shred” guitar contest. Scroll on for some photos from the festival.

Band Profile: Bad Habitz

Bad Habitz, a youth rock band based in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, jams out under the light of CHAUVET® DJ fixtures. Jon-Paul LeClair runs the light show for this little group of rockers and incorporates 23 CHAUVET® DJ fixtures in their setup. Read on and get to know more about the band.

1. How did you come up with the name of the band?
The founder’s last name is Abitz, so they thought Bad Habitz would be a cool name.

2. How many members are there?
The band is comprised of four members: Zakk Abitz, 13 (lead vocals, lead guitar), Chloe Abitz, 10 (drums, vocals), Parker-Jon LeClair, 13 (bass, vocals) and Tanner Lardinois, 14 (rhythm, lead guitar and vocals).

3. What type of music do you play?
Bad Habitz plays 70’s and 80’s hard rock, as well as anything from Tesla, FireHouse, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Soundgarden and Metallica.

4. What CHAUVET® DJ fixtures are included in your setup?
I use two 4BAR™ Tri wash lights for uplighting, six SlimPAR™ Tri-12 IRC to wash the stage and highlight performers and eight SlimPAR™ 64 for highlighting the drummer and downlighting. Two 4Play™ effect lights create a nice beam effect, while two Intimidator™ Scan LED 300 scanners add movement and excitement. The fixtures are controlled using an Obey™ 40 controller and a Data Stream™ 4 allows me to run lines to each section of the stage instead of daisy chaining everything. To enhance the beams and make the lights pop, I use a Hurricane™ 1100 fog machine.

5. Are they permanently installed somewhere or do you set them up for each performance?
The band performs in local bars throughout Fox Valley, at festivals and other events. My rig is completely portable and has to be to accommodate the band. It probably takes about an hour, sometimes a little bit longer, to set everything up.

6. Complete this thought: A show without lights is like…..
A show without lights is like steak without A1 Steak Sauce. It’s that important.

Our distributor from France, Algam, visited CHAUVET® HQ after The NAMM Show 2012. While they were here, we had a little fun while shooting a video short starring Algam President, Gerard Garnier. Our top question: “Parlez-vous CHAUVET®?” (translated to ‘Do you speak CHAUVET®?’) While we await its completion, here are a few behind the scenes photos to enjoy.

6 questions for David Dienstbier

Meet our July 2011 Facebook Fan of the Month, David Dienstbier, from Omaha, Nebraska.

1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product:  I’ve really been pleased with all of my CHAUVET® lights so far, but my new Intimidator™ Scan LED 300 scanners are by far my favorite.  Super smooth movement at any speed, solid quality build and insanely bright beams!  They’ve really pumped up my light show.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video:  I’m a big fan of the “MiN Spot Array” video that shows off 48 MiN™ Spots going through a synchronized routine.  Really cool!

3. Favorite LD:  Willie Williams and Ethan Weber.  The U2 360 tour was and is an amazing accomplishment on all levels.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights:   I live in Omaha, NE and the best venue for live music and lights is Slowdown.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® user:  I light the band more like a DJ than traditional live acts because we want the dance floor packed all night and that means it’s all about energy and movement.  Best advice, based on my experience, is to plan the progression of your shows. Building a light show can get expensive very quickly, so start with foundation fixtures and build towards the effects that will complement your shows the most.  Look for inspiration everywhere: architectural lighting, concerts, videos, etc.  Color adds a huge impact. By playing colors off of one another, you can create a great looking palette of light with only a few fixtures.  Oh, and if you are lighting a live band, don’t forget the drummer!  Use a couple of LED PAR fixtures to uplight and downlight the drummer. It really makes ‘em pop!

6. Complete this sentence: A show without lights is like…  Popcorn without butter.  What’s the point?
