DJ Spontaneous Goes Wireless on a Whim

Orlando Torres, aka DJ Spontaneous — owner of Spontaneous Entertainment, simplified his uplighting system by selling all his wired fixtures and replacing them with wireless Freedom™ Strip Mini Quad-5 wash lights. He is very impressed with his new gear and created a video review to share his thoughts with the world. Tune in for an overview of the fixture, tips to remember when operating it and a demonstration of how to use it with a D-Fi™ 2.4 Tx transmitter.

“I just wanted to say what a great fixture the Freedom™ Strip Mini Quad-5 is,” Torres said. “I was looking to upgrade my uplighting system and go from wired lights, to great quality, time-efficient fixtures. Thanks to Chauvet, I found it! When I first saw all the reviews from NAMM, I was impressed and decided to take the plunge and sell all my lights and go completely wireless — it was the best thing I have ever done. Set up time takes 3-5 minutes, breakdown is even faster and the quality of the 5-watt, quad-colored LEDs is insane. I currently have 14 Freedom™ Strip Mini Quad-5 wash lights and will be purchasing a few more in the near future.”

Ages Events Revamps Uplighting System with Freedom™ Strip Mini Quad-5

Jason Hadjoglou, owner of Ages Events — the preferred entertainment company of the NY Jets, recently sold all his American DJ® Mega Bar fixtures and revamped his setup with wireless Freedom™ Strip Mini Quad-5 wash lights. Read on to understand why he made the switch and how he feels about his new uplighting system.

Why did you choose to add Freedom™ Strip Mini Quad-5 fixtures to your setup?
I was already impressed with the original Freedom™ series. When I heard about the launch of the new Freedom™ Strip Mini Quad-5 — with its higher output and quad-color (RGBA) LEDs — I knew I needed to revamp my uplighting system with these fixtures ASAP.  The new Freedom™ Quad-5 series really steps up to the plate with 4-in-1 LEDs that provide a rich blend of infinite color combinations, and I have already seen over 18 hours of battery life using a single color.  Also, the immediate availability of the Freedom™ Charge S and Freedom™ Charge P made my decision even easier.

In regards to being a mobile entertainer, what have you found to be the benefits of having fixtures with battery power and wireless DMX?
This past year, I ran into a situation where I needed additional uplighting for two jobs that were taking place at the same time so I ended up renting Freedom™ Strip Mini and Freedom™ Par wash lights from I DJ Now in Babylon, NY. Every weekend after that, I found myself renting the Freedom™ series to save myself the cost of an extra roadie/technician. I also saved myself at least an hour and a half in setup time — because I didn’t have to run power wires and signal —and an hour cleaning up.  I realized the these fixtures saved me a lot of time and money, not to mention the stress factor and cost of taping.  The overall look is also cleaner and more versatile — I was sold.  I sold all my American DJ® Mega Bar fixtures and waited for the new Freedom™ Quad-5 series to hit the shelf.

How do you control the fixtures?
With the Freedom™ Strip Mini Quad-5 wash lights, I now have the ability to send as many units as possible to a job and give my tech the IR remote for simple point-and-shoot control. This is ideal for events where we are just doing uplighting and a huge setup with extensive programming isn’t necessary. During full shows, we use ShowXpress™ to seamlessly integrate all of our Chauvet fixtures.  As a business owner and lighting designer, choosing the right controller for the right job makes my life easier and allows for a more cost effective business operation. Having the ability to be “free” with my lighting gives me the ability to quickly move fixtures on short notice and increase functionality. For example, if I have to light the ceremony area at the last minute, I can grab all the fixtures within minutes and relocate them to the main reception area — this was never even a possibility or thought with wired units.

Instead of showing potential clients photos of uplighting setups, have you ever brought these fixtures along to give a live demonstration?
This is funny by itself.  I purchased a few Freedom™ Par wash lights and keep them in my office for two reasons: to create the client’s color scheme right before their eyes and to hand them the fixture and show there are no wires, tape or mess. This is important because most clients don’t want messy wires in the background of their photos. I’m sure photographers are more focused on capturing the moment instead of analyzing little things that might end up in the background, so I am sure they do their fair share of editing due to wired fixtures.  It’s like the old saying goes, “until you have had better, you would never know.”

Music Mixers Entertainment Finds Freedom™

Jason Citrone, owner of Music Mixers Entertainment and CHAUVET® DJ VIP member, has a degree in technical theatre-lighting design from the University of Rhode Island and more than 20 years of experience specializing in weddings. Music Mixers Entertainment was one of the first companies in Rhode Island to offer uplighting to clients. Last summer, Citrone incorporated 16 Freedom™ Par wireless wash lights to simplify set up and operation during events.

“I love the ease of set up, as well as the ability to control the lights remotely,” Citrone said. ”A lot of the weddings we do take place in tents — we love the look we get with the Freedom™ fixtures.”

Members of the same family typically share the same values. When it comes to lighting fixtures, the same analogy applies. For example, each fixture in the 100 percent wireless CHAUVET® DJ Freedom™ series shares the same set of values. Testing out the Freedom™ Series – Part 2

-written by Jon-Paul LeClair

Freedom™ Strip Mini
I was excited to test the CHAUVET® DJ Freedom™ Strip Mini and planned to use it as an extra uplight for our drummer. I currently use four SlimPAR™ 64 wash lights around the drum kit, so I set the Freedom™ fixture on the floor behind her. The unit comes with detachable legs, which allow you to place it in whatever vertical position you want. Depending how you transport the fixture, you may be able to leave the legs attached. It would be nice to have a folding leg system because I would rather not lose the washers and bolts.

Like the Freedom™ Par, Freedom™ Strip Mini can be configured in basic 3-channel DMX mode or 4-channel DMX mode, which opens up other functions as previously explained. I chose 4-channel DMX mode for my application. A word of caution to those who use traditional LED PARs like the SlimPAR™ wash lights: 3-channel DMX mode does not include dimmer control, so controlling all your fixtures with one fader may prove to be difficult.

Again, the unit is completely wireless. Chauvet also sent along a wireless remote. Since I run my lights with a PC, I only tested it for a short time. The remote, which is very slim and lightweight, would be handy to keep in your pocket and change the fixture’s color without having to go around a room and manually adjust them.

The fixture is compact and fits in tight spots — including the area between our backdrop and drummer — to light dark spaces. It throws a good amount of light and worked great in my application, however, it will get drowned out by more powerful fixtures.

Another item of note, the Freedom™ series includes master/slave mode for standalone master/slave operation. The manual explains everything, but I mention it for those running cables and chaining fixtures — be sure to check the input you are using and ensure you are using the standard DMX in/out ports. I set the fixtures up once or twice (using the wrong port) and wondered why the fixture, and other fixtures down the chain, were not functioning as expected.

Overall, the Freedom™ series is highly convenient with its built-in wireless DMX and super-long battery life for untethered power. These fixtures make for a clean show environment, and best of all, no knots in your cables. I really like how easy it is to position the fixtures in order to get light where you need it. The optional remote adds even more convenience allowing you to run your lights without a controller. If you want a fast, easy, wireless setup, you can’t go wrong with the Freedom™ series by Chauvet.
