Status Update – Chauvet Showroom Makeover

Remember when we announced our redesigning the showroom at Chauvet headquarters project? We have an update – the design is complete, the TRUSST® trussing system is secure and all 226 fixtures are mounted. The design features a combination of CHAUVET® DJ and CHAUVET® Professional fixtures. In addition to wash lights, pixel-mapping fixtures, moving heads and effect lights, the entire Intimidator™, Scorpion™ and SlimPAR™ Pro series, as well as the VIP™, COLORado™ and Q™ series all have a home in the showroom. Now that every fixture is in its place, all we have to do is program them…all 226 of them! In the meantime, check out some updated photos.

One-on-One with Stéphane Gressier

Stéphane Gressier is the international sales director at Chauvet and has been a member of the team for almost two years. Read on and get to know a little bit about him.

1. Where are you from?
This is a question I always struggle to respond quickly to. Here is a synopsis: I was born in France, but my first home was Vietnam for 7 years, France for 2 years, Jordan for 2 years, France for 3 years, Venezuela for 7 years, Brazil for 2 years and now the United States where I have established roots between Los Angeles and Miami with my wife and children for the past 21 years.

2. Why Chauvet?
I got to know Chauvet because I purchased a Scorpion™ Storm FX laser from Guitar Center a few years back.  Having been an amateur DJ in my college days, I always kept an interest in sound and lighting trends by doing some gigs here and there.  All this changed when I was given the opportunity to interview with Albert Chauvet in late 2010 and got a glimpse of what Chauvet was about. From then on, I felt I was hit by lighting and the story is still unfolding. I have to say this about Chauvet — the incredible talent our people bring together, along with the drive to succeed, fosters a working environment that feels like a family. We all watch out for one another with the ultimate goal of delivering the best product and support that money can buy to our beloved customers and end users.

3. Where did you work prior to joining the Chauvet team?
I am the former general manager of the U.S. business unit of a Spanish flooring and roofing manufacturer with factories in Spain, the United States and Central and South America.

4. Favorite food?
Vietnamese cuisine — hands down. However, I enjoy the foods of all the countries I have had the opportunity to visit.

5. Favorite type of music?
Any music that generates all types of emotions, whether it’s salsa or merengue when I have a hitch in the hips, movie soundtracks or any modern dancing music.

6. Favorite thing to do outside of work?
Spend time with my family, photography and motorcycling.

7. What is one thing about you that people would be surprised to learn?
People are always surprised to learn that I am Eurasian because it physically does not show. However, if they were to meet any of my late grandmothers, they would say, “WOW!”

8. A show without lights is like…
A show without lights is like hearing without seeing.

What Happens in Vegas Goes on the CHAUVET® DJ Blog

Chauvet ventured to Las Vegas for LDI 2012. All four Chauvet brands featured their own booth showcasing new and soon-to-be released products. During the show, CHAUVET® DJ introduced new gear designed for mobile performers and club installations. To best showcase the new line, the CHAUVET® DJ booth was built using TRUSST® — a trussing system built with the highest standards of safety. Eager attendees flocked to the booth to see the latest addition to the Intimidator™ series —CHAUVET® DJ Intimidator™ Beam LED 350. The powerful moving head emits a concentrated, 4-degree beam to project aerial and long-throw effects. Additionally, CHAUVET® DJ Scorpion™ 3D RGB and CHAUVET® DJ Scorpion™ Burst GB joined the Scorpion series of lasers with new, colorful effects to enhance any show. For the ultimate atmospheric effects, CHAUVET® DJ Nimbus™ and CHAUVET® DJ Geyser™ RGB proved to be showstoppers at this year’s show. Check out some photos we took while attending the show and tune in to the video to see the booth’s programmed light show.

Understanding the Pixel-Mapping Effect

by Allan Reiss, CHAUVET® DJ product manager

Pixel-mapping effects add eye candy to setups and enhance stagnant LED lighting displays. To some mobile entertainers, pixel mapping seems like an out-of-reach effect.  However, there are fixtures — like the PiXPar™ series — on the market that are specifically designed for pixel mapping. Or if you’re creative, you can use multiple fixtures to craft a grid and simulate the effect.  To understand the basics of pixel-mapping effects, click here and read on.

1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product.
My favorite CHAUVET® products are the Q-Spot™ 160-LED and Intimidator™ Spot LED 250 moving heads.  I have 10 Q-Spot™ 160-LED and two Intimidator™ Spot LED 250 moving heads with two more on the way soon. Both fixtures have a lot of great features for their price point and are very dependable and resilient.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video.
My favorite video is “Limb by Limb.” It is performed by Shafty, Portland’s tribute to Phish, and features Q-Spot™ 160-LED and Intimidator™ Spot LED 250 moving heads. The video showcases the real potential with these fixtures, including highlighting the smooth and slow pan and tilt movements. I feel like there aren’t too many lighting designers out there using these fixtures to their full potential — most seem like they are set on sound active mode.

3. Favorite DJ.
I am not a DJ so I really don’t have a favorite. However, my favorite lighting designer is Jefferson Waful of Umphrey’s McGee.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights.
My Favorite venue is a beautiful theater built in 1905 called The Star Theater located in Portland, OR.  It has 60-foot ceilings so the Q-Spot™ 160-LED beams have plenty of room for spreading and interacting with the amazing architectural features.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs.
Always put the safety of the musicians and audience first.  It is very important to always gaff or secure cable runs located in foot traffic areas in order to eliminate tripping hazards.  It is important to not only keep the public safe, but your investments as well.  Keeping your cable runs neat increases safety, and is also aesthetically pleasing and professional looking.

6. Complete this sentence: A show without lights is like…
A show without lights is like eating food without any flavor.  You can do it, but it’s not nearly as enjoyable and memorable.

CHAUVET® DJ Transforms the Blue Room

The owner of a multi-million dollar beachfront estate in Laguna Beach, Calif. enjoys entertaining so much that he transformed one of the rooms in his home into a miniature club. Nicknamed the “Blue Room,” the miniature club features an enormous flat panel TV for video, movies and karaoke, a state-of-the-art audio system, an automated touch panel control system, a wine cellar and bar, an underwater view into the patio hot tub, priceless ocean views and a light show created with CHAUVET® DJ gear.

Red Fish Illuminations lighting designer Doug Northeim specified a Scorpion™ GBC laser, an Intimidator™ 1.0 scanner and a DIAMONDstrip™ strobe light to transform the 25-by-25 foot space. To meet the owner’s needs, Northeim created a high energy dance club effect that can play all night long without getting monotonous — all with the touch of a button.

“Architecturally speaking, the room is clean lined and pure, so the simplicity lends to a wide range of energy states,” Northeim said. “It can go from a soothing underwater glow and ripple effect, complete with actual ocean waves from the beach outside brought in via microphone, or it can be a high energy dance club with a fully automated video, audio, and lighting system. The CHAUVET® DJ fixtures transform the space. The innocently simple space, which might be used for a formal wine tasting party, can instantly transform into a high energy club when the guests are ready to take the party to the next level.
