Metro Sound & Lighting Hosts Chauvet Expo 2013

Our Central Territory Manager for CHAUVET® DJ, Jelani Williams, traveled to Minnesota to take part in Metro Sound & Lighting’s Chauvet Expo 2013. The expo featured lighting demonstrations using the latest CHAUVET® DJ gear and TRUSST® kits — the Intimidator™ Spot series proved to be a crowd favorite. During the event, Williams touted the CHAUVET® DJ VIP Rewards program and delivered a ShowXpress™ seminar that taught attendees how to do the following: set up a fixture, build a show in editor, use the generator and how to trigger shows in Live. Overall, it was a very successful event!

Status Update – Chauvet Showroom Makeover

DJ Profile: DJ Bill Lyons

Bill Lyons, aka DJ Bill Lyons, lives in Bangor, Maine and DJs at wedding receptions, clubs, holiday parties and school dances from Bar harbor to Millinocket. Read on and get to know more about your fellow DJ.

1. How did you get started as a DJ?
Back in 1980, we hosted a school dance to raise money for our high school class. With the help of friends, we put together a sound system, setup a few lights and DJ’d the dance. It’s been almost 32 years and I still get people that remember those dances.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
I am the general manager at an airport retail company where I put in more than 40 hours per week. However, I always put full-time hours into my DJ business.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
My setup keeps growing as I get new ideas and new lights become available. My light show consists of two Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving heads, 12 SlimPAR™ 64 wash lights, two LED Pinspot™ 360 fixtures and two Hurricane™ F-800 fog machines. To create effects, I also have a Cubix™, two Derby™ X, two Obsession™ LED and two Slasher™ effect lights. I use an Obey™ 10 DMX controller to control all my fixtures, but I would love to have the ShowXpress™ software. I would also like to add some of the completely wireless Freedom™ fixtures as well as a couple more SlimPAR™ 64 wash lights.

4. What is your favorite fixture?
Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 is by far my favorite fixture. I am new to DMX and these lights have so much to offer — I learn something new about them each time I use them. Great product.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Pay attention to your client and give them 110 percent every time. The music is for their listening and dancing enjoyment, not yours. Keep in mind that anyone can play music, but it’s what you do for your client (before and while you are playing) that sets the professionals apart from the others. Be a professional.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
“Wild Ones” by Flo Rida, “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen and “Turn Me On” by David Guetta and Nicki Minaj.

DVDJ G-Funk Rings in the New Year with CHAUVET® DJ

To create a festive atmosphere during a New Year’s Eve bash held at the Hyatt Regency in Denver, Gene Jone, aka DVDJ G-Funk of Dance Trax Productions, set two Intimidator™ Spot LED 350 moving heads atop two, 7-foot truss towers. More than 500 people attended the event and rung in the New Year as he spun the latest hits and CHAUVET® DJ fixtures added movement to the dance floor.

DJ Profile: DJ Kreations

Kenneth “KC” Ham, aka DJ Kreations, is a 28 year old audiophile from Kansas City who has always loved music. He grew up playing the drums in a band, then joined some bands, tried recording, and moved on to DJing. He has a love for music that he enjoys sharing with people. Read on and get to know more about your fellow DJ.

1. How and when did you get started as a DJ? What types of events do you do?
While attending college at Missouri State University, I happen to play music and supply audio equipment during a large mansion party. There happen to be several promoters, as well as bar and club managers, in attendance who asked me to start working at their venues. After college, I moved back to the Kansas City area and started a career as a video editor. As my college friends started getting married, I was asked to work their receptions. This lead to more and more business and developed into what it is today. I do a lot of wedding receptions, private parties and corporate and non-profit events

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
I have always worked the technical side of events including theater, live event, film, TV and some radio. DJing started taking up too much of my time so I have since made it my full-time job.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
My setup includes the following CHAUVET® fixtures: COLORdash™ Batten, Double Derby™ X, Derby™ X, two LED Techno Strobe™ strobe lights, one Hurricane™ 1100 and DMX-4 LED. I am looking to add a blue or purple laser and two more LED Techno Strobe™ strobe lights to my collection. I would also like to update all of my dance effect lights.

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
My favorite fixture has always been the COLORdash™ Batten because of its size, output and versatility. I use this fixture the same way most DJs use a group of PAR can-style fixtures. It is programmed to chase and run programs. The output of the COLORdash™ Batten is amazing — it replaced all of my PARs so I only use one fixture on a light tree. Depending on the size of the event, I might add some additional fixtures to keep up with it.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Don’t cheap out on used, out-of-date equipment. These days, equipment is cheap enough that you can constantly add as your income allows you to. I wasted a lot of money changing equipment, so do your research, get quality equipment, and take care of it because it will take care of you.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
My top three most requested songs currently are “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO, “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz and “Back in Time” by Pitbull.

Why Your Mobile Setup Needs a Backdrop

-written by Brett Allen

A few years ago, my band was featured in an article titled, “7 Things That Separate a Good Band from a Great One.” Granted, it sounds like something out of Cosmopolitan magazine, but it ran in a music magazine based in Chicago. Surprisingly, none of the seven problems had to do with sound, but centered on stage presence, lighting and ambience. Let’s face it, most establishments don’t have a stage and they tend to throw DJs and bands into a dark corner. I’ve even played in bars where patrons have to walk through the band to get to the bathroom.

The article offered a great suggestion for any type of mobile performer: bring a backdrop to hang behind your performance area. Better yet, have your DJ or band name on it. A backdrop has a twofold effect: it covers up all the crap on the walls behind you and offers a neutral background. The name of the game is marketing — every picture taken will feature your name instead of a bar sign or picture in the background. With a quick crop that great action shot is Facebook ready.

Let’s face it, a mottled gray background, while a great idea, is boring. So I started using CHAUVET® DJ COLORstrip™ wash lights behind the backdrop. I wanted a lightweight backdrop that allowed light to shine through, so I built my backdrops out of bed sheets. Originally, I placed two COLORstrip™ wash lights behind the sheet and set them in master/slave mode. I was immediately blinded. Seriously, the COLORstrip™ is a bright fixture. Don’t believe me? Go to YouTube and type in “COLORstrip™” and “birthday party.” You will find a video where the DJ is only using two COLORstrip™ fixtures to wash the whole area in color. To correct the blinding effect, I mounted both fixtures on the floor and positioned them straight up, which gave the hazy effect I was looking for.

My old mobile DJ booth was made out of clear Plexiglas® and had my name etched into it. I ran four PARs behind it (two in the front and one on each side) to create a glow. Fast forward 10 years and I could have had the same effect, but better, by vertically mounting CHAUVET® DJ COLORstrip™ Mini wash lights. They are half the size of COLORstrip™ and work great for smaller areas. A band in town mounts them to their speakers for extra light. I just want to figure out how to mount a COLORstrip™ Mini to an oscillating tower fan…minus the fan.

Still not sure about backlighting? Jump on YouTube and search for “COLORstrip™” and “DJ façade.” After watching some of these videos, I may dump my sheets and build a new backdrop. In the meantime, I am trying to figure out how to make an oscillating, DMX-controlled COLORstrip™ Mini and probably void my warranty.
