6 Questions for Kamil Nowak

Congratulations to our August Facebook Fan of the Month, Kamil Nowak. Nowak, who is a full-time student, is originally from Poland and lives in Wallington, N.J. As a college sophomore, he works as a part-time web developer for a small marketing firm and is interested in anything computer related including DJing, graphics, video and web design. Nowak has a passion for lighting and is interested in everything from emergency vehicle lighting to DJ and club lighting.

“It’s amazing what light is capable of,” Nowak said. “It has so many uses and I feel that far too often, we take it for granted. “

1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product.
COLORrail™ IRC.  I think it speaks for itself, but COLORrail™ IRC has the capability to wash almost any area with multi-colored light.  Whether you’re washing a dance floor, wall or performers, you will get a bright output and transform any event.  Plus, built-in chase patterns and programs double as an additional effect and provide your audience with extra eye candy.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video.
Intimidator™ Spot LED 350 by CHAUVET® DJ is probably my favorite video — it captures the capabilities and features of the fixture perfectly.  I wanted to go buy a pair of them immediately after watching the video.

3. Favorite DJ.
My favorite DJ is Ean Golden.  His website is very informative and offers great advice and tutorials.  He essentially set up a community where both new and experienced DJs can learn from each other while sharing tips and tricks.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights.
Considering I’m still under 21 and can’t really get into any nightclubs, I’m going to have to skip this question.  However, any event or venue able to completely transform its look and create a spectacular show using lighting gets two thumbs up from me.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs.
Buy once, cry once.  Meaning, buy high quality gear the first time, and if it breaks down a few years down the road, you’ll be crying because you miss the gear, not because you wasted your money on junk.

6. Complete this sentence: A show without lights is like…
A show without lights is like a movie without the video.

1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product.
My favorite CHAUVET® light product has to be my Q-Spot™ 260-LED. They are bright enough to cut through any amount of wash I have on stage, have smooth movement and feature a number of different gobos and effects that never seem to get old. They are only limited to the creativity of their operator.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video.
My favorite is the Q-Wash™ 560Z-LED product video. I own these fixtures and chose this video because it really demonstrates the finesse, power and professionalism that went into the construction of this fixture.

3. Favorite DJ.
I’m not huge into the DJ scene but I can certainly appreciate the work they do. I prefer seeing live music and three of my favorite artists, are Elton John, Billy Joel, and Robbie Williams. They have spoken to me through my own music and song writing.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights.
Lighting the Christian rock group IONA. The band came over from the UK for a North American tour and gave me free reign to program scenes and movements. The show ended up being a huge success.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs.
Go with CHAUVET® — they are the best bang for your buck. When I provide lighting, my philosophy is ‘the brighter the better.’

My favorite product is the Hurricane™ Flex 1800 fog machine. It performs as advertised and is one of the most durable fog machines on the market. My favorite product, which I don’t own yet, is ShowXpress™. I’ve had the opportunity to work with it and look forward to having my own software.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video.
DJ Mikey Mike demos CHAUVET® DJ Nimbus™

Oddly enough, I’m really not into the DJ scene that much. I’m more of a party DJ that plays requests and such. That being said, I have enjoyed the Deadmau5 videos I’ve seen.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights.
I’m a big fan of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) because of their light show. It’s easy to gain an appreciation for lighting watching what these guys do six nights a week.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs.
It’s a terrible feeling when you’re DJing an event 100 miles from home and a cable quits working. It’s even worse when you realize you don’t have a spare. Make sure you’re always prepared and have spare parts.

My favorite CHAUVET® fixture is the 4Bar™ Tri wash light. At that price, you can’t beat the light output and all inclusive package. It’s a very useful and versatile fixture.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video:
Any of the product demo videos. I watch them anytime I am looking for a new fixture.

3. Favorite DJ:
Karl Detken. He’s one cool guy and he works for CHAUVET®.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights:
In terms of lighting, I think the most impressive event I’ve been to would be either a Third Day or Michael Bublé concert. Both had massive amounts of lighting.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs:
Do your research. Lighting is changing all the time and you want to get the right to meet your needs. I use the CHAUVET® DJ Facebook page religiously to find out what others are doing.

6 Questions for Enrique Salazar

Congratulations to our January/February Facebook Fan of the Month, Enrique Salazar. Salazar, aka DJ Kozz, is originally from Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico. His uncles introduced him to the DJ scene at a very early age and he began DJing in 1986. Salazar owns Kozz Deim Enterprises, a consulting technology firm for the entertainment industry, and is an avant-garde artist in Mexico. He travels throughout Mexico and the United States as a disc, light and video jockey and participates in Mexican radio and television shows. Read on and get to know more about our loyal fan.

1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product and why:
I have a favorite wash light, moving yoke and effect light. In my opinion, the COLORado™ 2 IP  is one of the top LED PAR style wash lights in the entertainment scene. It has powerful color temperature presets and lux. The best moving yoke in the USA market is the Q-Spot™ 560-LED. It is powered by three 60-watt LEDs which give a 1,929 @ 5m lux. The best light for impressing customers is the Trident™ LED effect light. The 7-watt tri-colored LEDs give me a wide coverage angle.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video:
My favorite CHAUVET YouTube video is the “Create Your Own Gobo for CHAUVET® Gobo Zoom™ LED” video. It’s an easy and fast way to fulfill special requests from clients at weddings and corporate fuctions where customized projections are a plus.

3. Favorite DJ and why?:
My favorite colleague is Armin van Buuren because he owns his business and manages one of the most important and profitable record agencies in the world. When you review international dance music charts, it’s not a coincidence that an Armada Music artist is in the top 10.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights:
Right now, my favorite event setup is the design created for the event covered in “CHAUVET® Mingles with New Faces of Hollywood“. It’s great how technology and an event can help the people of Haiti.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs:
Pay attention. Read and stay updated. Make sure you understand the content. A lot of DJs only care the cost of lighting gear and very few DJs review the specs. If you operate that way, you can’t do a real cost versus benefits analysis.

6. Complete this sentence:
A show without lights is like a Christmas tree without lights.

Behind the Scenes: DJ Expo 2011

by Jody Ligas, communications specialist for CHAUVET®

Here at CHAUVET®, we went to DJ Expo 2011 with a purpose. We understand many of our customers weren’t able to attend, so it became our mission to create a video that would take you inside the Music Trends booth and give you a first-hand look at our new products. Our goal was to give you a behind the scenes look and make you feel like you were there. We could’ve given you a straightforward video, but why when we could entertain you as well? Thanks to Todd, our awesome video guy, for coming up with a skit that was a blast to shoot but also met our goal.

On the first day of the show, we woke up early and immediately got to work. The first item on the agenda was the video, “Operation CHAUVET®.” I don’t think I’ve ever changed clothes so many times in one day! Todd’s idea was to have an undercover reporter attend DJ Expo and get the scoop on the six new CHAUVET® products. So, the characters “LED Lisa,” “Mr. Alneice,” and “DJ Blue Haze” made their debut. (We hope you got a few laughs and enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed making it!) Next up was footage of the main stage, which featured a performance by DVDJ Unique, and CHAUVET® Product Manager Allan Reiss, who ran the lights on the stage from his Android! Be sure to check it out here if you haven’t seen it.

During our visit, we were able to chat with Jim Tremayne, DJ Times editor, and get some insight into the show and all the events. While brief because he was busy being in charge, he gave us some great information! We also spoke with Bob Savarese of Music Trends to get his opinion on the traffic within the booth, customer reactions of the new products and overall opinion of the show. Afterwards, we had to rush to eat dinner, change clothes (again), and then head to the Promo Only party. Finally, at 2 a.m., we were done for the day!

Between filming, interviews, seminars and the Promo Only Party, our time in Atlantic City was booked solid. Though it was a lot of work, it was a lot of fun too. Because all work and no play isn’t any fun, we made sure to take some time and kick back and enjoy the performers at the Promo Only Party, poke around the Trump Taj Mahal and stroll along the boardwalk.
