DJ Profile: DJ Crochet

Joey Crochet, aka DJ Crochet, is a DJ in Oceanport, N.J. who works for A & S Sound. The DJ entertainment and event production company specializes in weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Sweet 16 parties, school dances, karaoke, theatrical productions, equipment rentals and more. Read on and get to know more about your fellow DJ.

1. How and when did you get started as a DJ?
I became interested in DJing a few years ago when I started experimenting with Virtual DJ — I wasn’t very good. As time went on, I progressed significantly and was offered a job with A & S Sound in Oakhurst, N.J.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
I am a full-time student, so DJing is currently a side job. However, I would love for it to be a full-time job.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
I use SlimPAR™ 56 wash lights for uplighting, Q-Spot™ 260-LED moving heads for effects and COLORstrip™ linear wash lights to illuminate my facade.

setup

4. What is your favorite fixture?
My favorite fixture would have to be Q-Spot™ 260-LED — they’re very bright and an overall great fixture. Moving heads are my favorite type of fixtures because they have so many features and are able to do so much, especially with the capabilities and control ShowXpress™ provides.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
If someone gives you advice, take it in and don’t forget it. The reason I am where I am today is because I work with some very talented people. I take their advice to hear t in order to become a better DJ. Also, use Chauvet ShowXpress™ to run your lighting — it’s one of the best programs out there.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
My top three most requested songs are:  “Danza Kuduro” by Don Omar ft. Lucenzo, “Sexy and I Know It” by LMFAO and “Gangnam Style” by Psy.

DJ Profile: Dr. Byrd

Joe Banko, aka Dr. Byrd, owns Stone Age Lighting & Sound in Arizona and is one of the newest members to the CHAUVET® DJ VIP Rewards program. He spent 12 years on the road as a lighting designer and roadie, then went on to work in the IT industry. After a few decades, Banko grew tired of the IT sub culture and went back to the entertainment industry. He specializes in parties, proms, weddings, corporate events and any other type of event where people want to have a great time. Read on and get to know a little more about your fellow DJ.

1. How and when did you get started as a DJ?
I spent 12 years on the road as a lighting designer and roadie. Traveling the country in a Winnebago or 12-seat plane can be fun, but it can also physically burn you out. You do learn to cook and that ended up getting me married. I got sidetracked for a couple of decades in the IT industry, ended up getting tired of the IT sub-culture, and went back to entertainment a couple of years ago. I have much more fun throwing photons and sound waves around in creative ways.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
Both — it depends how busy I want to be. I use about four software packages and have written an iPad application to run all of them from a single device. I also run and program my DMX/MIDI sequences from the same application using my iPhone to send live video to my video switching software. This allows me to interact with the audience and run the show at the same time — people love to be involved. For side jobs, I’m also a data analyst, database developer and software developer.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
My setup includes: Scorpion™ RGY and Scorpion™ GBC 2.0 lasers, LED Mushroom™ and 6SPOT™ effect lights, a MotionFacade™ LED drape and a Bubble King™ bubble machine.  I’m looking to add a bigger truss system, a Nimbus™ dry-ice machine, Intimidator™ Spot moving heads, more uplighting and Xpress™ 512 Plus.

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
My Scorpion™ lasers. I have loved laser technology since I was a teenager and you can program the heck out of these using DMX.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Watch: what’s hot in video, what gets people dancing and what the competition is doing. Listen: what’s hot in music, how to hook tunes together and what your clients want.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
“Gangnam Style” by Psy, “Party Rock Anthem” by LMFAO, “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey.

The Butterfly Effect

Butterfly

Youth may be wasted on the young, but fortunately the desire to be a great DJ isn’t.

As I’ve been settling in to my new position at CHAUVET DJ®, people from around the world have taken the time to send good wishes. That’s been really great, but it was the 14 year old from Canada who saw one of my videos that stuck out for me. He wrote that he’s been the DJ at his local ski spot for the past year and owns a Mini 4Bar™ and a 6 Spot™ that he controls using his Obey™ 10 controller. Now he wants to expand his lighting rig. I didn’t even know what a lighting rig was when I was 14. Okay, I’ll admit it, electricity hadn’t been invented yet. But this kid has the right idea and knows exactly what he wants. At 14!!!!

He was interested in the Chauvet Intimidator Spot Duo™, wanting to mount them on a portable trussing unit like the Chauvet CH-31™ (although I encourage everyone to also check out the Blurred Matt TweetsTRUSST™ Arch and Goalpost Kits). He knows what he wants and he’s not afraid to ask for it because he ended his email with, “Anyways, I was wondering if you could hook me up with a deal on one of them.” I couldn’t have been happier at this kid’s request.  Not because I can hook him up on a deal on anything (for any you wondering out there, I can’t), but the big picture was clear to me:

This kid is the future of DJs.

Or at least young DJs like him are. He speaks the language. He wants to get better at his craft. He’s studying videos and reaching out to other DJs. If we care about the future of mobile entertainment at all, it’s critical that we nurture, educate and help kids like this. We can’t let our forums, teeming with cannibalistic snarkiness in our fervor to prove we know more than the next guy, discourage fresh and idealistic DJs. It doesn’t take much to encourage a young entertainer like this. When I let him know that I couldn’t hook him up with gear, his next request made that clear:

Matt Tweets 2

I think I could handle that.

The butterfly effect theory says when a butterfly flaps its wings in one part of the world it can cause a hurricane in another part of the world. I believe that, a small, seemingly insignificant change here can create a ripple effect, leading to big changes there. I’m hoping that the envelope of stickers I sent to Canada last week is a tiny little flap of wings that might add a little something to the hurricane of what surely will be this young DJ’s future success.

Because youth isn’t wasted on the young. It’s the future of our profession.

DJ Profile: Stacy Zemon

Stacy Zemon is considered an authority on the DJ industry and is widely recognized as a distinguished industry leader who made ground-breaking educational contributions. She has 15 years of experience as a mobile DJ and has reached millions as a radio, club, karaoke and mobile DJ, as well as a writer, author and publisher. Zemon is also the founder and president of DJ Video Network (DJVN) — a free, one-stop destination and platform for DJs to view and share original video content. Read on and get to know more about her.

1. How did you get started as a DJ?
I started as a full-time DJ in 1979 doing weddings, parties and corporate events.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
I worked as a mobile DJ for 15 years. Now, I am the president of DJVN, and the publisher and chief scribe of Pro Mobile DJ — a web site that provides tools and resources to DJs managing their own entertainment services.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
N/A

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
My favorite CHAUVET® DJ gear is the 4BAR™ wash light and Nimbus™.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Work for a multi-op and learn the craft before considering venturing out on your own. Also, when the time is right, invest in quality equipment. Over time, it will be well worth the additional money spent.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
As a DJ for 15 years, I would say my top three requested songs of all time were: “Sweet Caroline” by  Neil Diamond, “Dancing Queen” by ABBA and “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton.

DJ Profile: Light & Sound

Light & Sound, aka Samuel McGee and Cameron Hall, is a DJ/VJ duo who live in Meridian, Miss. and perform at house parties and venues throughout Mississippi and Alabama. They specialize in Electronic House and Dubstep and describe their shows as, “an intense array of lights and lasers accompanied by some of the grimiest bass known to mankind.” Read on and get to know more about this dynamic duo.

1. How and when did you get started as a DJ/VJ?
We started out in February 2012 when Hall (who is now Sound) tried to DJ and VJ at the same time. I (McGee) noticed he was having some difficulty doing both at the same time, so I asked if he needed help and here we are six months later having the times of our lives.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?

This is not a full time job for either of us at the moment — though we would like it to be one day. Hall works as a safety manager for H&M Construction and I’m an assistant manager at Chance and Dooleys.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
Our setup includes the following CHAUVET® DJ gear: one MotionFacade™ LED drape, one Scorpion™ Storm FXRG and one Scorpion™ GVC laser, one LED Shadow™ blacklight, one Derby™ X and two 4PLAY™ effect lights, two COLORpalette™ wash lights, two Intimidator™ Scan LED 200 scanners and an Obey™ 70 http://www.chauvetlighting.com/obey-70.html DMX controller. We are hoping to add more lights to our setup so our shows continually change and grow.

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
I like them all so much, so it’s hard to pick a favorite. However, if I had to pick, it would be the Scorpion™ Storm FXRG. This laser is perfect for electronic music and it demands attention. The strobe effect accompanies some of the snarling sounds you hear in Dubstep perfectly. 4PLAY™ comes in at a close second. This fixture allows me to match the strobe effect with the BPM in the song.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the industry?
Read the lighting manuals and practice as often as possible. There are many ways to control the lights — you just have to figure out what works best for you. Also, if possible, go with LEDs over halogen bulbs. Even though they are a bit pricier, you will find yourself saving time and money in the long run.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
“Cage the Rage” by Zomboy, “Firepower” by Datsik, and “Hello” by Porter Robinson.

Journey to Chauvet

By Geoff Short

Geoff MapWhere am I? How did I get here?

These have been very common questions over the last week or so as I left behind life as I knew it in Cleveland, Ohio to begin my journey to join the marketing team at Chauvet Lighting in Sunrise, Florida. Most DJs and other entertainment pros are very familiar with Chauvet. But in case you live in a cave just know that Chauvet is a leader in the entertainment lighting industry.

A big part of my job at Chauvet will be to do what I have always done – connect with you, fellow DJs musicians, event planners, everyone – to share our experiences and explore ways lighting can enhance your gigs and venues and help make you more money. So for those of you who don’t know me, I thought I would share a little bit about my journey to Chauvet and my first impressions of being the new guy here. So please allow this little travelogue to serve as an introduction. But let’s back up a bit to the beginning.

Hi! I’m Geoff Short and I’m the Assistant Marketing Manager/Customer Engagement & Education here at Chauvet Lighting. That’s a mouthful so for a while, feel free to call me the New Guy.

If you’ve ever read any of my writing for MobileBeat, you may know that up until last week, I was the Sales and Promotions Manager for Jerry Bruno Productions, Northeast Ohio’s largest live music entertainment company. I am also a DJ/MC and was the Band Leader for The Avenue, one of JBP’s busiest special event dance bands. As a DJ and Band Leader, Chauvet has always been a pantheon of gear to me (I hope “pantheon” means something big and cool and kind of imposing, because that’s what I mean). A mystical, big company with an exotic name somewhere far away in the land of Oz that magically produces lights that I frequently salivate over (and often have considered trading one or both of my kids for). I am a Chauvet customer – a DJ from Cleveland who, like the gear junkie I am, still experiences that rush when that Chauvet box finally arrives at my door. But I never could have imagined actually sitting at a desk – my own little piece of Chauvet Real Estate – as an employee.

But here I sit.

It was kind of a whirlwind process getting here. I sent in a resume kind of on a whim. I knew the company was in Florida and I lived in Cleveland. But I really respected Chauvet as a customer and learned of a possible opportunity there. Imagine my surprise when I got a call just a couple hours later! That call (on a Friday) set up a phone interview on the following Monday. On Tuesday I found myself on a plane heading to Florida. I was thrilled to meet the people I met and tour the facility, but I was also nervous. This was getting real. I got back on a plane and was home the same night. To make a short story even shorter, I accepted a job offer and became an employee of Chauvet Lighting! Of course the challenge was that I had to leave everything in Cleveland behind. My band, my old job, DJ gigs and most importantly, my family (at least temporarily – we’re flying back and forth a bit until things can get settled), all left behind to take advantage of this amazing opportunity to connect to fellow DJs, bands, event planners and club owners everywhere about their experiences and how Chauvet can help make them better. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one for me and my family.

After 1 week I can honestly say that I am thrilled to be here. I think the main thing you can take away from only one week on any job is your impression of the people you work with. To me, that is a huge indicator of how you will like working for a company. I always thought the best way to interview someone would be to play some sort of board game or charades or something to see how funny, competitive, petty or whatever else emerges whenever people relax a bit and play. The people all over this building in every department have been incredible. Warm, friendly, wiling to help, generous with their time, funny. Honeymoon period though this may be, I know this is going to be great. You know how it is when you’re the new person. Part of your orientation consists of spending time with people in other departments to learn as much as possible about the company. This is invaluable stuff for the new person, but kind of a pain for everyone else. As the new person you can’t help but feel like you’re imposing on people’s busy schedules. I’ve been the person called upon to help orient a new employee. Have you ever tried explaining what you do all day every day to someone who has no clue about what you do? It’s hard. Nobody wants to talk about their jobs – they just want to do them. But here at Chauvet, everyone has been welcoming and informative and I’ve really appreciated that. So far so great.

So I’m here in South Florida working at a great company. This is a cool, progressive, creative place and we want you pros to get involved. I’m here to continue to learn from all of you so let’s talk! I’m at gshort@chauvetlighting.com. Because I’m so excited about everything, I’m leaving you with just a few highlights of my first week at Chauvet:

• After a Human Resources orientation, looked for the men’s room and accidentally walked into a closet. Strangely enough, I had no trouble finding the snack machine.
• Made a great impression on everyone on day 2 by wearing a pair of headphones made by a competing company. In my defense, I needed to watch training videos and they were they only pair I had at the time. But they will never see the light of day again.
• Had to set up various new passwords for new email and computer accounts and promptly forgot them all. I think I accidentally tried to hack into the CIA website.
• Really looked forward to gloating around my new co-workers here in South Florida about the Cleveland Cavaliers beating the Miami Heat when the Cavs had a 27 point lead in the 3rd quarter. Instead walked into work in shame as the Heat Streak continued and LeBron got the last laugh over Cleveland…again. Really Cleveland? Blew a 27 point lead? You betcha!

Seriously…learning incredible things about incredible products with incredible people. And that’s always worth locking myself in a closet or two.

And screw the Cavs.

DJ Profile: Instant Replay II Mobile Disco

Pete Hedges, who goes by the stage name Instant Replay II Mobile Disco, is originally from Oxford, England and has more than 30 years of experience in the industry. He currently lives in Swindon and caters to Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire. Read on and get to know more about him.

1. How and when did you get started as a DJ?
I began DJing in 1978 after a friend asked if I had any music he could borrow. I gave him a list and he said, “Wow, you could run a disco with this.”  The rest, as they say, is history, and I never looked back.  We specialize in a variety of events including: weddings, birthdays, corporate functions and Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
For the past 15 years, I’ve worked full time in the Customer Care (support) department for a software company located in Newbury. However, DJing is more than a hobby. It’s not a full time job, but I approach it that manner and the show is more professional. The IT side helps me create and manage my own web site, while the Customer Care side brings me into contact with new customers every day.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
Our light show is based around the MotionDrape™ LED curtain. To enhance the effects, two Mega Trix™ effect lights and two Hurricane™ 700 fog machines complement the LED drape.

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
MotionDrape™ LED is without a doubt my favourite fixture because it adds that special something and gives a sense of professionalism to the show. It’s the centerpiece of the light show and is reliable, impressive, and easy to setup and use.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
My best advice is to make sure your gear is reliable and you are reliable. Above all else, make sure you put the customer first. Our motto is, “Make your function a night to remember and relive the memories forever.” For you it might be “just another gig,” but for the customer, it’s their big night. Help them enjoy themselves by playing what they want to hear and leaving them wanting more.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
My top three most requested songs right now are: “We Found Love,” by Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris, “Call Me Maybe,”  by Carly Rae Jepsen and “Moves Like Jagger,” by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera. For party songs, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” by Whitney Houston, “I will Survive,” by Gloria Gaynor and “Dancing Queen,” by Abba.

DJ Profile: DJ Bill Lyons

Bill Lyons, aka DJ Bill Lyons, lives in Bangor, Maine and DJs at wedding receptions, clubs, holiday parties and school dances from Bar harbor to Millinocket. Read on and get to know more about your fellow DJ.

1. How did you get started as a DJ?
Back in 1980, we hosted a school dance to raise money for our high school class. With the help of friends, we put together a sound system, setup a few lights and DJ’d the dance. It’s been almost 32 years and I still get people that remember those dances.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
I am the general manager at an airport retail company where I put in more than 40 hours per week. However, I always put full-time hours into my DJ business.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
My setup keeps growing as I get new ideas and new lights become available. My light show consists of two Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving heads, 12 SlimPAR™ 64 wash lights, two LED Pinspot™ 360 fixtures and two Hurricane™ F-800 fog machines. To create effects, I also have a Cubix™, two Derby™ X, two Obsession™ LED and two Slasher™ effect lights. I use an Obey™ 10 DMX controller to control all my fixtures, but I would love to have the ShowXpress™ software. I would also like to add some of the completely wireless Freedom™ fixtures as well as a couple more SlimPAR™ 64 wash lights.

4. What is your favorite fixture?
Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 is by far my favorite fixture. I am new to DMX and these lights have so much to offer — I learn something new about them each time I use them. Great product.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Pay attention to your client and give them 110 percent every time. The music is for their listening and dancing enjoyment, not yours. Keep in mind that anyone can play music, but it’s what you do for your client (before and while you are playing) that sets the professionals apart from the others. Be a professional.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
“Wild Ones” by Flo Rida, “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen and “Turn Me On” by David Guetta and Nicki Minaj.
