1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product.
My favorite CHAUVET® products are the Q-Spot™ 160-LED and Intimidator™ Spot LED 250 moving heads.  I have 10 Q-Spot™ 160-LED and two Intimidator™ Spot LED 250 moving heads with two more on the way soon. Both fixtures have a lot of great features for their price point and are very dependable and resilient.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video.
My favorite video is “Limb by Limb.” It is performed by Shafty, Portland’s tribute to Phish, and features Q-Spot™ 160-LED and Intimidator™ Spot LED 250 moving heads. The video showcases the real potential with these fixtures, including highlighting the smooth and slow pan and tilt movements. I feel like there aren’t too many lighting designers out there using these fixtures to their full potential — most seem like they are set on sound active mode.

3. Favorite DJ.
I am not a DJ so I really don’t have a favorite. However, my favorite lighting designer is Jefferson Waful of Umphrey’s McGee.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights.
My Favorite venue is a beautiful theater built in 1905 called The Star Theater located in Portland, OR.  It has 60-foot ceilings so the Q-Spot™ 160-LED beams have plenty of room for spreading and interacting with the amazing architectural features.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs.
Always put the safety of the musicians and audience first.  It is very important to always gaff or secure cable runs located in foot traffic areas in order to eliminate tripping hazards.  It is important to not only keep the public safe, but your investments as well.  Keeping your cable runs neat increases safety, and is also aesthetically pleasing and professional looking.

6. Complete this sentence: A show without lights is like…
A show without lights is like eating food without any flavor.  You can do it, but it’s not nearly as enjoyable and memorable.

1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product.
COLORrail™ IRC.  I think it speaks for itself, but COLORrail™ IRC has the capability to wash almost any area with multi-colored light.  Whether you’re washing a dance floor, wall or performers, you will get a bright output and transform any event.  Plus, built-in chase patterns and programs double as an additional effect and provide your audience with extra eye candy.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video.
Intimidator™ Spot LED 350 by CHAUVET® DJ is probably my favorite video — it captures the capabilities and features of the fixture perfectly.  I wanted to go buy a pair of them immediately after watching the video.

Considering I’m still under 21 and can’t really get into any nightclubs, I’m going to have to skip this question.  However, any event or venue able to completely transform its look and create a spectacular show using lighting gets two thumbs up from me.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs.
Buy once, cry once.  Meaning, buy high quality gear the first time, and if it breaks down a few years down the road, you’ll be crying because you miss the gear, not because you wasted your money on junk.

A show without lights is like a movie without the video.

1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product.
My favorite CHAUVET® light product has to be my Q-Spot™ 260-LED. They are bright enough to cut through any amount of wash I have on stage, have smooth movement and feature a number of different gobos and effects that never seem to get old. They are only limited to the creativity of their operator.

DJ Mikey Mike demos CHAUVET® DJ Nimbus™

I’m a big fan of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) because of their light show. It’s easy to gain an appreciation for lighting watching what these guys do six nights a week.

6 Questions for Lucas Beine

Congratulations to our April Facebook Fan of the Month, Lucas Beine. Originally from Jackson, Missouri, Beine owns STS Mobile Productions and has been using DMX to program light shows since 2000. He loves how lighting enhances shows and does a lot of work for bands and nightclubs.

“You can have a bad-ass performer rockin’ out on stage, but they will be in the dark without a lighting guy,” Beine said. “Plus, I love hearing people talk about the show, lights and all, at the end of the night.”

Read on and get to know more about our loyal fan!

1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product and why:
My favorite CHAUVET® light would be my old school Intimidators™. I mean, come on! These were the first fixtures in the series and they are still rockin’. I love the micro-stepping motors for their smooth scan and sweep.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video:
I can’t say that I have a favorite YouTube video because I really don’t watch online videos that much. I spend most of my time spinning records and programming lights with my kids.

3. Favorite DJ and why:
My all-time favorite DJ is Aphrodite. Back in the 90s, his music got me into playing drums and bass which in turn got me into sound and lighting. If you want a gig as a musician or DJ in Jackson, you have to come with the sound and lighting package if you want to be heard.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights:
The OZ Nightclub in St Louis has a bad ass light show, and so did the Tool concert. At the concert, I was more in love with the number of moving yokes and paid more attention to the lighting than the concert itself. Radiohead also has a sick light show — the LED panels on the back of the stage were bad ass.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs:
Well new CHAUVET® DJs, my tip to you is to simply enjoy it because running lights and DJing is a lot of fun.

6. Complete this sentence: A show without lights is like…
A show without lights is simply not a show!

6 Questions for Enrique Salazar

Congratulations to our January/February Facebook Fan of the Month, Enrique Salazar. Salazar, aka DJ Kozz, is originally from Cuernavaca Morelos, Mexico. His uncles introduced him to the DJ scene at a very early age and he began DJing in 1986. Salazar owns Kozz Deim Enterprises, a consulting technology firm for the entertainment industry, and is an avant-garde artist in Mexico. He travels throughout Mexico and the United States as a disc, light and video jockey and participates in Mexican radio and television shows. Read on and get to know more about our loyal fan.

1. Favorite CHAUVET® light/product and why:
I have a favorite wash light, moving yoke and effect light. In my opinion, the COLORado™ 2 IP  is one of the top LED PAR style wash lights in the entertainment scene. It has powerful color temperature presets and lux. The best moving yoke in the USA market is the Q-Spot™ 560-LED. It is powered by three 60-watt LEDs which give a 1,929 @ 5m lux. The best light for impressing customers is the Trident™ LED effect light. The 7-watt tri-colored LEDs give me a wide coverage angle.

2. Favorite CHAUVET® YouTube video:
My favorite CHAUVET YouTube video is the “Create Your Own Gobo for CHAUVET® Gobo Zoom™ LED” video. It’s an easy and fast way to fulfill special requests from clients at weddings and corporate fuctions where customized projections are a plus.

3. Favorite DJ and why?:
My favorite colleague is Armin van Buuren because he owns his business and manages one of the most important and profitable record agencies in the world. When you review international dance music charts, it’s not a coincidence that an Armada Music artist is in the top 10.

4. Favorite event/nightclub with lights:
Right now, my favorite event setup is the design created for the event covered in “CHAUVET® Mingles with New Faces of Hollywood“. It’s great how technology and an event can help the people of Haiti.

5. Favorite tip for new CHAUVET® DJs:
Pay attention. Read and stay updated. Make sure you understand the content. A lot of DJs only care the cost of lighting gear and very few DJs review the specs. If you operate that way, you can’t do a real cost versus benefits analysis.

6. Complete this sentence:
A show without lights is like a Christmas tree without lights.

Is There A Show Without Lights?

Can someone really imagine a show without lights? The DJs we interviewed throughout the year in our Facebook Fan of the Month interview series–click here to check it out–pretty much agreed that a show without lights is a contradiction in terms. And we agree. Lights are part of a show just as a limb is part of a human body. Well, their answers are more fun and creative. Read on:

A show without lights is like…

1. …dark. No, really, it’s like going on a date with a beautiful woman while you’re blindfolded! - Larz Hanson, Tenn.

2. …the dark side of the moon. No matter how amazing it is, you can’t see it without some lights! - Alex Bardos, N.C.

3. … feasting on bread and water when you could be having steak and lobster and champagne. - Kirk Hilzinger, Mo.

4. … a party with no people! Aron Wickart, Ill.

5. … popcorn without butter. What’s the point? – David Dienstbier, Neb.

8. … a Christmas without presents…POINTLESS! – Storm Savino, Fla.

9. … dancing in the dark. Matt Holmes, Minn.

10. … watching a movie with no sound. It’s called audio-visual for a reason! Victor Wooten answered this question with “one-dimensional” and he was dead-on with his answer. An exciting show stimulates more than one sense. There are no exceptions. Nick Pignetti, Md.

11. … SpongeBob SquarePants without Patrick. – Shawn Herold, Ga.

12. … a James Bond movie without a cool car or gadgets…it just shouldn’t happen! – Jasper Ibe, Canada
