A Tale of Haze and Fog

Written by guest blogger Larz Hanson, Detour DJ & Audio (and former Facebook Fan of the Month!)

For years, I’ve used fog machines to give my lights something to play in. I started with small, cheap models and worked my way up to high power mega-blasters. They worked okay, but I noticed they often bothered people in the audience. Not so much the fog itself, but the noisy “whoosh” as the fog machines belched out a thick cloud. Early on, I’d fight with the machines trying to find a good combination of settings on the timers to balance the thick initial blast with decent hang time. Later, I’d add an old fan in front of the fog machine to disperse the fog more evenly. Essentially, I moved from fog machines to an elaborate, noisy, finicky hazer.

I recently tried something new: A CHAUVET® Hurricane™ Haze 2 haze machine. A hazer differs from a fog machine in that, instead of high temperature and a high-pressure pump to blast out a large volume of fog, hazers use lower temperature and very low, continuous exit speeds for the fog, then team the fog exhaust with a fan that disperses it. The result is an even mist (or “haze”) that works much better than uneven clouds of thick fog to show off the best in modern lights.

Older hazers used a greasy, oil-based fluid, and I knew I didn’t want that. But many newer hazers, including this one and larger CHAUVET® Arena™ Hazer 3  use water-based fluid that doesn’t leave a residue on your expensive equipment. Although the Hurricane™ Haze 2  is the smaller of the two hazers, I’m absolutely blown away by the atmosphere it creates. Even outdoors!

Doing the math, based on the specs I read before I bought the hazer, I was expecting to use about a half gallon of fluid per show. But in reality, those specs must be based on full output, and full output on this thing would look like a NASCAR victory burnout! I’ve done about 20 hours of light-show programming in my garage and a six-hour outdoor show recently, all using the hazer on a setting of two (of four settings, four being the highest) for the fog  and the fan on high. So far, I’ve only used a half-gallon! Although it comes with a nice wired remote and DMX capability, I just use the manual mode without the remote for simplicity. I can easily say my fog machines are for sale now…I’ll never use anything but a hazer from now on!

Promo Only Party a First for CHAUVET®

Every year during the DJ Expo, Promo Only hosts a phenomenal party where major talents rock the stage and the crowds go wild. For the first time in the history, a lighting manufacturer co-hosted the highly anticipated Promo Only Party — that manufacturer just happens to be yours truly! Together with Denon DJ, we hosted a great event at the House of Blues which featured renowned performers and drew a huge crowd.

Hopefully you were there and enjoyed the night as much as we did, but just in case, we’ll recap the night and highlight some of our favorite moments. Neon Hitch put on a jaw-dropping performance and her costume was fabulous (curious as to who designed that headpiece!). Crystal Waters was outstanding — though we’re undecided if it was her or her backup dancers that made the show. DJ Roonie G was awesome and (we’re convinced) is the only DJ who can get away with mixing Notorious BIG and the Muppets singing Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Jason Derulo hypnotized all the ladies in the crowd and made their hearts melt as he performed his hit song, “Whatcha Say.” Everyone stuck around for the grand finale which was well worth the wait. Headliner 50 Cent took the stage with Tony Yayo and Jeremih, and gave us the performance of a lifetime. Whew! Can’t wait to see what 2012 has in store!

Behind the Scenes: DJ Expo 2011

by Jody Ligas, communications specialist for CHAUVET®

Here at CHAUVET®, we went to DJ Expo 2011 with a purpose. We understand many of our customers weren’t able to attend, so it became our mission to create a video that would take you inside the Music Trends booth and give you a first-hand look at our new products. Our goal was to give you a behind the scenes look and make you feel like you were there. We could’ve given you a straightforward video, but why when we could entertain you as well? Thanks to Todd, our awesome video guy, for coming up with a skit that was a blast to shoot but also met our goal.

On the first day of the show, we woke up early and immediately got to work. The first item on the agenda was the video, “Operation CHAUVET®.” I don’t think I’ve ever changed clothes so many times in one day! Todd’s idea was to have an undercover reporter attend DJ Expo and get the scoop on the six new CHAUVET® products. So, the characters “LED Lisa,” “Mr. Alneice,” and “DJ Blue Haze” made their debut. (We hope you got a few laughs and enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed making it!) Next up was footage of the main stage, which featured a performance by DVDJ Unique, and CHAUVET® Product Manager Allan Reiss, who ran the lights on the stage from his Android! Be sure to check it out here if you haven’t seen it.

During our visit, we were able to chat with Jim Tremayne, DJ Times editor, and get some insight into the show and all the events. While brief because he was busy being in charge, he gave us some great information! We also spoke with Bob Savarese of Music Trends to get his opinion on the traffic within the booth, customer reactions of the new products and overall opinion of the show. Afterwards, we had to rush to eat dinner, change clothes (again), and then head to the Promo Only party. Finally, at 2 a.m., we were done for the day!

Between filming, interviews, seminars and the Promo Only Party, our time in Atlantic City was booked solid. Though it was a lot of work, it was a lot of fun too. Because all work and no play isn’t any fun, we made sure to take some time and kick back and enjoy the performers at the Promo Only Party, poke around the Trump Taj Mahal and stroll along the boardwalk.

SX Education at DJ Expo 2011

by Allan Reiss, product manager for CHAUVET®

One of the highlights of my trip to the 2011 DJ Expo was hosting two ShowXpress™ seminars: SX Education 101 and SX Education 201. For those not familiar with ShowXpress™, it’s a software program that turns almost any computer into a lighting console. You should’ve seen all the jaws drop when I informed them I was running all the lights on the main stage from my smart phone! (It’s also available as an app for most hand-held devices.) It was awesome to hear people say, “Oooooooh! I didn’t know you could do that!”

Attendants were encouraged to bring their laptops so they could navigate the program as I went through its different components. For live lighting examples, we set up the following fixtures in the room: four COLORrail™ wash lights, two Gobo Zoom™ LED effect lights, eight Intimidator™ Spot LED 150 moving heads and 12 SlimPAR™ 56 LED PARS mounted on Satellite™ D-Fi battery packs.  Both seminars were packed with inquisitive DJs who were fascinated with the program capabilities. I answered a ton of great questions with the funniest being, “can the software control my wife?”

The seminars were broken up into two sections: SX Education 101 for the beginner and SX Education 201 for more advanced training. For those of you who were not able to attend, this is what you missed.

SX Education 101
I gave an overview of the software and discussed the following topics:
 *installation and drivers
 *setup and fixture profiles
 *navigating editor and fixture groups
*syncing lights with music and video
 *playing back your scenes
 *uploading to the interface

SX Education 201
This was a little more in depth as I discussed the following topics:
 *creating fixture profiles
 *layering and macros
 *triggering with MIDI
*managing multiple light shows and universes
*configuring and using the wireless application for your iPhone or Android device
*using the generator which creates complex scenes with ease

Afterwards, we drew names and the selected attendants won either a MiN™ Laser FX or a limited edition CHAUVET® t-shirt.

Overall, I think the ShowXpress™ seminars were a big success.  It was a huge benefit to be one-on-one with people who actually use the product. It definitely got the wheels turning and gave me some ideas for next year!

CHAUVET® Performs Flawlessly at Festival

An array of CHAUVET® fixtures took the stage next to various bands, dancers and DJs that performed at a recent Camp Kind Music and Arts Festival, an event organized on the countryside of Waterman, Ill., to support the NICE Center, a local food and clothing pantry.

5 Reasons to Switch to LEDs

by Allan Reiss, product manager for CHAUVET®

Highly efficient, LEDs, or light emitting diodes, are becoming the norm in the lighting industry. As a DJ you’ve probably wondered why LEDs are that much better than traditional fixtures that use lamps. Click here to see why you should make the change now.

Designing the main stage at the 2011 DJ Expo

Earlier this week, CHAUVET® played a prominent role at one of the most exciting DJ trade shows in the United States. The 2011 DJ Expo, presented by DJ Times magazine, took place at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City and CHAUVET® was in the spotlight as a sponsor of some major event components including seminars, the Promo Only party and the main stage. As a main-stage sponsor, CHAUVET® performed the lighting design and stage setup.  The DJ Times Square Stage, where high-profile artists in the industry (like the talented DVDJ Unique) performed, featured an enormous stage illuminated with over 70 CHAUVET® fixtures.

Allan Reiss, product manager for CHAUVET®, selected which products were going to be featured in the setup and designed the light show using ShowXpress™ (which he ran on his smart phone from the show floor!).  Because of the size of the stage, he included the following fixtures in his design: three MotionDrape™ LED backdrops, eight Q-Beam™ 260-LED and 11 Q-Spot™ 260-LED moving heads, two Arena™ Hazer 3 haze machines, 14 COLORrail™, eight SlimPAR™ Pro RGBA, 18 SlimPAR™ Pro Tri and six SlimPAR™ Pro VW wash lights. It took five men (three from CHAUVET®’s product development team and two from DJ Expo) almost seven hours to affix the fixtures to the stage’s flown truss and hang the LED drapes. Once the setup was complete, the light shows went off without a hitch and the crowds went wild as talented DJs went on to spin their hearts out for the four-day show.
